Default 9'-7" from the Ashley River - 9/22/2017

We spent two days on the Cooper River during the 2nd week of the season. We got the boat within 10 feet of an 8 footer and a 9 footer but were hoping to find something bigger. We ran out of time and had to give up.

Friday the 22nd, we left the upstate at 6 a.m. and launched at 10 a.m. on the Ashley River. We ran all the way to 526 and only saw 3 gators. We headed back almost to the put-in and saw about 7 gators along the way. Most seemed to be decent size (6-8 ft) but nothing overly impressive. So we ran East again for about 8 miles until we spotted one we thought was close to 10 ft. Before we could get in casting range he dropped below the surface. It stayed down for about 20 minutes and then came back up in almost the same place. It went down again for twenty minutes and came back up again very close to the same place. Finally, we got a hook in it by casting to the area and it ran to the middle of the river and sat in 15 ft in a strong current. It took us 30-40 minutes to get a 2nd hook because of the current, but that 2nd hook helped us get a handline and then we had some leverage. We pulled it up beside the boat and put an arrow in it for assurance. We got everything collected and pulled it up beside the boat. We put two rounds in it and pulled it aboard around 6 p.m.

We got home around 11:45 and processed it in the garage until 1:00 a.m.

Thanks, we were just glad it didn't turn into a night hunt and make the day even longer.

Thanks,,,,,the locals call that the Oakbrook ramp.

You don't have to go that far,,,You passed by a lot of big gators if you went all the way to I-526.
Next time you go, check around the gardens.
Look around Magnolia's old flooded rice fields and Middleton gardens. I used to ski up there years ago......
