My wife is the bread winner in the family as a nurse director so she has a job opportunity in Charleston SC... I知 familiar with the Francis Marion National Forest and I definitely plan to spend some time there... but I was hoping someone could suggest another are of public land that is close to the Charleston area....

Thanks for any help and I知 looking forward to meeting new people and hunting down south...

By the way I知 54 years old spent 8 years in the USMC lived in havelock NC for about 6 of those years... I知 married one son and I知 a industrial maintenance mechanic for Dap Inc in Baltimore Md and currently living in Southeast Pennsylvania... I知 a avid deer and turkey hunter...

Parts of the FMNF are extremely close to Charleston. 30 minute drive to some great spots. You will love it. I'm sure there are places south and west of Charleston but imo they will be a farther drive.

You'll love hunting in SC. It's a beautiful state.

I only know Francis and north. You have FM, Woodbury, Samworth, Lewis Ocean Bay, Sandy Island and the Waccamaw NWR.
Those are the ones I know off the top of my head. Closest would definitely be FM. I don't live in SC but I can help you out with any general questions you may have about the area. Ive been hunting up there a couple times a year for the past decade or so.

West in Walterboro, Colleton County Area are three great Areas but usually are drawn for Deer, Bear Island, Donnelly and Edisto WMA's. I do know that they have a period that is Bow Only. A bit farther is Webb, Palocoalla. and Hamilton Ridge. The Islands are Bow only and is loaded with deer----South Williman, Bussard Island, Warren Isand, Beet Island, Ashe Island and Otter Island. You have to have a boat if you hunt the Islands and you can get a free Permit from the DNR Office at Bennetts Point. These Islands are Bow Only and They also ok camping at them with the permit. Go to www.dnr.sc,.gov/wma/maps,html and you can get a lot of info there on WMA's in SC. The Islands have no pressure at all and very few people know about them.
